I cannot call His name and serve another god. I must serve Jesus in spirit and in truth. We cannot call His name and serve other gods. Some of us say, “I don’t serve any other god. I don’t go to Ogun’s house; I don’t go to Osun’s house. I was born in church, bred in church. I am a good churchgoer, so how do I serve other gods?” But you are serving anger; you are serving unforgiveness. You are serving pride. Some of us are serving worry. The reason we come before God and cannot give Him the praise due to Him is because we brought worry and kept it in our hearts when the Bible told us to cast it out. Worry becomes a god. So yes, you don’t go to Ogun’s house, you don’t go to Osun’s house, but you house worry, and worry becomes a god. So you’re standing before the God of all gods, but worry is occupying 98% of your mind. Then who is your God: the true God or worry?

For some of us, it’s pride. We are calling His name, but pride is our god. For some of us, it’s anger. We are calling His name, but anger is our god. So we call His name, then serve anger later. We call His name, then serve pride later. We call His name, then serve envy later. We call His name, then serve worry. It is an insult to come before the God of gods with worry on your head, the one who says He is the God of all flesh, and with Him, nothing is impossible. Then you come to Him, and the reason you can’t express yourself before Him is because worry is enthroned. Yet we say He is the God of all gods.

We cannot call His name and serve other gods. We must shout Jesus in spirit and in truth. Some of us are just calling His name, not because we believe, but because it’s the Christian thing to do. We must serve Jesus in spirit and in truth. In the book of John, Jesus was very clear about how He must be worshiped: in spirit and in truth. We cannot sing His song and then sing other songs.

Don’t feel bad; this is what happens in the secret place. God reveals us to ourselves so that He can fix us. He reveals our shortcomings so that we can be helped. It’s not to condemn us but to guide us. I recently saw Christians discussing the BET Awards and how they gave an award for Gospel/Inspiration to Tems, who is not a gospel singer. My problem isn’t that they gave her the award; what do you expect from the BET Awards? Why are Christians fighting over that? It’s not meant for Christians. We know what the gospel is, and it shouldn’t change what we know.

We can’t live a lie and call out His name. He sees our secret thoughts and knows what’s in our hearts. He knows when we are lying and when we are telling the truth. How can we hide from the all-seeing One? We must serve Jesus. When I know this, I say, “Jesus, help me. I need Your help.”

Cry out to Him and say, “Jesus, help me.”
