I’m Joe Nester, and I am a Christian artist. I’m originally from Wilmington, Delaware. I’m just going to share a little bit of my testimony with you guys. For the most part, I had a great childhood growing up. I was an All-State baseball pitcher, a typical high schooler, and had a lot of different cliques. I was always well-liked by everyone, including my teachers.
Shortly after high school, my childhood friends, my best friends, introduced me to hard drugs. I never thought in a million years that I would become a drug addict. But in less than six months, I found myself homeless, living on the streets. I told myself that it would only be for a summer, and then after the summer, I would clean my act up, enroll in college, and it would be just some crazy story I told my kids. Unfortunately, that summer lasted ten years—sleeping on the streets, under bridges, eating out of trash cans, going in and out of prison.
In 2012, I was on the run for first-degree armed bank robbery. I was looking at life in prison. I was completely lost, completely broken, and hopeless. As a last-ditch effort, I caught a train to Florida with nothing but the clothes on my back. I got to this treatment center, and I found comfort in writing music. It helped me deal with my urges and cravings to get high. Over the next five years, I was able to slowly piece my life back together. From the outside looking in, everything seemed to be going well. I had a good job, I was doing music, and I was clean and sober, but I was still empty on the inside. I was still caught up in lust, perversion, foul language, smoking—I was looking for external things to fix an internal problem.
It wasn’t until I found Lake Mary Church that all of that started to change. I heard Pastor Shat for the first time preaching the gospel in a relatable way. Obviously, I knew who Jesus was; I’d heard of Him, but I did not have a relationship with Him. Reading His word every day, allowing that word to edify me, renew my mind, and transform me from the inside out—these other things that I had been struggling with just started to break off of me. They started to fall off, and the love for these worldly things just started to fade away.
It has really ignited something inside me and equipped and empowered me to go out there and share this message with the world in a unique way. I realize so many people out there think they are free just because they’re clean and sober, but they have not accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. I want to share with them the gospel message of Jesus Christ and how there is true freedom—not just from drugs, not just from alcohol, but from all those things that you’ve been suffering with. He wants to free you from all that stuff, and His word says that His yoke is easy and His burden is light, and that His grace is sufficient.
The spark that started in me has spread to my wife, my kids, and my entire household. Now I’m just trying to spread it to the entire world in a unique way through my music.
